What The Future Holds for The Person With ADHD
What The Future Holds For a Person With ADHD
On the web there is a site completely dedicated to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
This site has a video series available under FAQS (Frequently Asked Questions) which addresses various topics all of which are about ADHD. This video series, committed to the topic of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, was written and narrated by a professional clinician experienced in treating ADHD patients. Appearing to be highly knowledgeable on this topic, his approach is quite professional. This video series is presented by MegaTech, Inc. which is the maker of the ADHD technological, treatment game, Cups and Balls.
The ninth video in this video series describes what the future is most likely to hold for a person with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The description gave me the distinct impression that there are essentially two possible paths the ADHD person is most likely to follow. One is filled with frustration and anxiety because the ADHD person lacked appropriate preparation for the future. The narrator indicated that it was most likely that the unhappy ADHD person had not been given the needed training based on his strengths, and abilities as well as adaptations made to accommodate his behavioral limitations.
Another requirement needed to create a happy and satisfying life for the ADHD person, according to the Narrator, is to consistently maintain therapeutic intervention centered on strengthening and increasing the person’s ability to focus, follow through, be consistent and curb impulsiveness. This information can be found at the web site: attentiondeficitdisordergame. com. The Narrator emphasized that many ADHD people lead happy, satisfying lives by establishing and sustaining a career path based on the person’s strength, interests, likes and abilities. However, this is only half of the equation for success and happiness for an ADHD person. He explains that continuing therapeutic intervention is essential and that it consists of two separate actions which must be maintained simultaneously for the ADHD person to experience success. The two approaches are: reducing the ADHD behavioral symptoms through therapeutic treatment, and making adaptations and accommodations within the ADHD person’s environment to compensate for his behavioral limitations.
Although previous videos presented some of the therapeutic treatments available for the ADHD person, (ADHD Treatments – Part One, and Available Treatments for ADHD – Part Two),
they were revisited. Therapeutic treatments available include: medications, neurofeedback, behavioral adaptations, as well as therapeutic games, such as MegaTech’s Cups and Balls, which provides direct practice on focusing and sustaining attention. (This game is available free of charge at: attentiondeficitdisordergame. com).
The second approach used in treatment plans for people with ADHD is adjusting the person’s environment to include adaptations and accommodations necessary for a successful lifestyle. Examples included structuring the classroom setting as well as classroom assignments to fit the behavioral needs of the ADHD person, as well as instructing the family in how to help the ADHD student learn material in a way that taps into his strengths and abilities rather than continuing futile, traditional methods. The Narrator categorically stated that not all teaching methods are appropriate for all students.
Planning for the future should also use the same mindset. Preparations for university training, college, or technical and all training schools, should be carefully considered, focusing on the person’s strengths and abilities. The ADHD person should not consider careers that are difficult to learn and complete, or careers that require task completion after their learning.
People that have ADHD or any functional disorders shouldn’t attempt careers that require significant organizational skills. The Narrator did share a positive insight by observing that when people with ADHD find the right career for them, they are very successful. It is important to select careers that are fitting to their strength areas because when they do, their lives prove to be extremely successful and rewarding.
On the other hand, when ADHD persons are in the wrong career which doesn’t accommodate for their limitations and symptoms, they are frequently frustrated with their work. They struggle, not achieving a sense of satisfaction. Going to work becomes a chore and they tend to take out some of their frustrations at home, as well as on their friends. Life becomes more of a struggle instead of a satisfaction.
The Narrator then addressed specifically the types of tasks and possible careers paths that have led to a successful, satisfying life for the ADHD person. Working on tasks that use large movements would bring more success to people with ADHD. Jobs that are flexible with adjustable time requirements are recommended. The ADHD person needs to focus on jobs that have clear expectations, and clarified procedures. Also, jobs that allow for the person’s adaptations and accommodations needed, helps the client complete the tasks required by the job as well as aid him to obtain employment that works best for that person.
Some examples given of appropriate jobs for the ADHD persons are: auto repair, facilities maintenance and management, construction specialties, business ownership in whatever interests they may have; outdoor professionals, rangers, guides, or professional sports instructors, or athletes themselves, as well as law enforcement. That’s just a small sampling of careers in which people with ADHD have been very successful. The Narrator explained that the future of an ADHD person can be very bright, but only under therapeutic conditions in which accommodations and adaptations have been made. Self esteem should also be acknowledged, avoiding denial or attempting occupations that are uncomfortable and not fitting for that person. Additional support from their families and friends should contain interactions which convey positive support with expectations of success.
Basically, this video identified the things a person with ADHD needs to do to have a successful satisfying life. First, he should continue consistent therapeutic intervention in order to lessen his ADHD symptoms and limitations. Then he needs to choose a career based on his strengths while accommodating for his limitations. This video appeared to be quite informative and helpful to a person with ADHD and can be viewed at: attentiondeficitdisordergame. com
