Anxiety In Children – How to Help a Child With Anxiety by Christopher Mollo
Are you looking for a way to help your child with anxiety?
Anxiety in children is a devastating problem for both parent and child, but one that doesn’t have to be permanent. There are many steps that you as a parent can take to help rid your child of anxiety.
It’s not uncommon for children to experience several forms of anxiety at some point while growing up. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD) are the two most commmon forms of anxiety that plague children.
So what can you do to help your child with anxiety? Well, the very first step is to identify the problem. You need to be sure that your child actually has an anxiety problem before you decide to treat them for it. Most children exhibit many different behaviors that are often mistaken for anxiety.
For instance, your child may cry and hang on you before you leave your home. This is often a common reaction that many children have when faced with separation from a parent. However, you need to be able to determine if this behavior is excessive. There is a difference between expected behavior and excessive behavior.
Once you have determined that your child has a problem with anxiety, the first thing you should do is consult a licensed medical professional. They are really the only people who are fit to diagnose and treat your child properly. There are many great information products that can assist you in caring for your child, but it’s up to your child’s physician or therapist to determine the level in which the parent should be involved in treatment.
A common misconception is that taking your child to a medical professional will always result in treatment with pharmaceuticals. This is definitely not the case. There are many different accepted methods of treatment, like cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, psychotherapy and behavioral therapies that do not involve the use of drugs.
Herbal remedies may also be considered, but should always be approved by a physician. Many physicians have no problem allowing herbal treatments in conjunction with their own when it comes to helping your child with anxiety.
A change in diet is also a healthy way to combat anxiety. Cutting out caffeine and controlling sugar intake, along with minimizing the use of decongestants and asthma medications can play a big role in helping control anxiety in children. Initiating better sleep habits will also make a difference, such as setting regular bedtime and wakeup times.
The most important thing to remember is that anxiety in your child can be treated and will be cured. If you approach the problem with an open mind and willingness to help, you will find that your child is returned to the best health in no time and will remain anxiety free.

Acceptability of weight loss treatments among overweight adolescents and their caregivers. $49.99 Obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States and has been linked to impairments in physical and psychosocial functioning. Consequently, treatments for obesity have flourished and health care professionals have increasingly turned to more invasive forms of treatment (e.g., bariatric surgery). In recent years, the availability of surgical obesity interventions has been extended from adults to adolescent populations. However, research examining the extent to which these procedures are acceptable to overweight adolescents and their parents is lacking. This study sought to examine the acceptability of adjustable gastric banding, a recently developed bariatric surgery procedure, in relation to four other common obesity treatments (i.e., dietary therapy, exercise program, family behavior therapy, and weight loss pills). Participants were recruited from a hospital-based weight management clinic. Inasmuch as acceptance is the basis for effective intervention programs, an understanding of adolescent and parental perspectives about obesity treatments in required to inform future weight loss program strategies. Results indicated that across informants (parents and children, boys and girls) gastric banding surgery and weight loss pills were perceived as less acceptable forms of treatment than diet, exercise, and family behavior therapy. There was also no significant correlation between treatment acceptability ratings and body mass index (BMI), health-related quality of life, or number of previously attempted weight loss strategies. Thus, although the number of bariatric surgeries occurring in the United States is on the rise and although gastric banding surgery in particular is being touted as a safer form of bariatric surgery, parents and children perceive this form of treatment to be less acceptable than other weight loss treatments on the market. Further exploration of the factors that influence parents' and children's negative perceptions of gastric banding |

Aggression and Depression Assessed through Art: Using Draw a Story to Identify Children and Adolescents at Risk $42.5 A study of more than two hundred children using Rawley Silver’s draw a story test showed a strong correlation between aggression or depression and certain types of artistic narratives; meanwhile, unbeknownst to Silver, a pair of Russian therapists were using Silver’s assessment tests in a similar fashion with Russian children and achieving similar results. Aggression and Depression Assessed Through Art: Using Draw-A-Story to Identify Children and Adolescents at Risk came about as a result of these studies, but the book’s scope goes beyond the numbers to investigate the connections between a child’s expression through drawing and his violent behavior. The text, written mostly by Silver but with chapters contributed by therapists from both the United States and Russia, compares drawings by children who have already exhibited violent behavior with those who have not, thus exploring the potential of the test for use as an early identifier of children and adolescents at risk for depression or inappropriate aggression. Other chapters examine the changes in emotional state revealed by a child’s responses to standard art assessment tests, as well as the cross-cultural applications of Silver’s tests. Silver is recognized as one of the earliest developers of art therapy in the United States, and by providing mental health professionals with a tool to help identify and treat disturbed children this book represents yet another of her major contributions to the field. |

An exploration study of the relationship between effectiveness of filial therapy training groups and group cohesion. $49.99 This study examined the relationship of group cohesion among heterogeneous and homogeneous groups on individual treatment outcome of child-parent relationship therapy (CPRT). CPRT is a filial therapy model that targets the parent-child relationship as a means for preventing or improving child and/or family problems. This study included 30 parents or caregivers from 9 groups which met for 10 sessions. Participants qualified for this study if their groups ended with at least 3 group members and 2 leaders, all pretest and posttest data on their child between the ages of 2–11 was completed, and if they attended at least 6 of the 10 sessions. Correlation coefficients, t-tests, and effect sizes were calculated.;Results demonstrated no statistically significant differences between pretests and posttests on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for all 30 participants; however, differences in measured effect (eta2) between children identified with borderline and clinical behavior problems and children with normal behavior problems suggest that CPRT is more effective among children who demonstrate significant behavior problems. Perceived and observed group cohesion measurements demonstrated no significant difference at the individual outcome level. This finding suggests that group cohesion may not be related to individual outcome. Although there was no significant relationship between group cohesion and individual outcome for this study, results of the group measurements regarding engagement and group cohesiveness, coupled with previous studies on CPRT effectiveness, suggest that CPRT should be utilized in homogeneous groups. |

Coaching For Behavior Change $17.95 If you can read a map for traveling from Point A to Point B, then, here is a practical step-by-step manual detailing a method anyone can learn to use for coaching someone to change behaviors, or help them improve their self-esteem. The author has managed to mix the best tools of Esteem Therapy and Reality Therapy with the unique concept of “Behavior Mapping” in a very easy-to-understand way that anyone capable of coaching can immediately use. Detailed examples of how to use this method are given using case studies from working with normal families having children with very common problem behaviors. To underscore the significance of this method, an appendix is included with the results of a 3-year substance abuse treatment program conducted using the general techniques described in the book, while under contract with the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections. The success rates for both general recovery and improved self-esteem, etc. for the 108 cases was considered remarkable. While this book was written specifically for the lay person, those working in institutional settings, or child care of any kind can apply much of the knowledge presented here. Professionals certainly may benefit from the information included in the appendix. |
