Child Psychologists
Posted by admin on Tuesday Jan 17, 2012 Under Child Behavior

Are psychologists required to report the emotional abuse of a child?
I’m aware physical abuse has to be reported, but does emotional abuse have to be reported as well? I read an article that said in California, a psychologist MAY report emotional abuse if the victim is over 65, but they aren’t required to. However, I live in Florida.
The short answer is no.
Psychologists in Florida are held to doctor – patient confidentiality.

Evolutionary Psychology, Public Policy and Personal Decisions $47.5 During the last 15 years, human sociobiology has metamorphosed into evolutionary psychology. It is concerned with the social problems and stresses hominid and primate ancestors encountered, the psychological mechanisms natural selection shaped to deal with these stresses, and the way those ancient mechanisms work now. Evolutionary psychologists are making great progress in expanding the understanding of human nature, however, this knowledge has had little impact on policymakers and legislators. Supreme Court justices and managers seldom consult evolutionary psychologists to help with their deliberations. When faced with private decisions few individuals ask themselves how a Darwinian perspective might help them. This volume’s aim is to start the process of using theory and findings of evolutionary psychology to help make the world a better place to live. This book takes evolutionary psychology explicitly into applied areas in a way no other book has. It includes a reasonable scope of applications from pornography to psychopaths and from morality to sex differences in the workplace. An applications section provides concrete ideas for dealing with social and policy issues, including chapters on women in the workplace, rape, and child support. Providing good coverage of basic issues and theory of the field, this book gives lay people and law/policymakers appropriate background to fully understand the applications chapters. Part II provides information on basic psychological mechanisms for group living–including chapters on emotions, reciprocity and legal reasoning, and self deception–that impact on how well public policy and law function. The material in the first two sections providean intellectual basis for the chapters in the third part of the book which deals with the application of evolutionary psychology to a variety of substantive areas related to public policy and personal decisions. A political scientist concludes the book with a commentary on evolutionary |

A Parents’ Guide to Encouraging Imagination and Creativity During Early Childhood $4.99 The ability to think sets human beings apart from all other species and the capacities of imagination and creativity are what set some human beings apart from others. Many people are highly skillful and possess vast stores of knowledge. However, precious few are able to manipulate and apply skills and knowledge in truly special ways. Society needs smart, competent people in order to function smoothly; it also needs imaginative and creative people to flourish and progress. It is evident that imagination and creativity first blossom during early childhood. On the other hand, it is not clear exactly where they come from. Genetics could be a major factor – it is possible that some children are simply born more imaginative and creative than are others. The environment may be more critical. Perhaps certain types of early experience produce great amounts of imagination and creativity in children. The fact is that no one has been able to predict accurately the level of imagination and creativity a child will eventually exhibit. Nor has anyone put together a program that will reliably increase a child’s imagination and creativity. In other words, there is no known method of bestowing or teaching imagination and creativity. However, research has demonstrated that these qualities certainly can be encouraged and enhanced during early childhood. Furthermore, psychologists and educators have discovered how important it is to do so. Without adequate and appropriate nurturing, imagination and creativity will not only fail to blossom fully, indeed, they actually may be severely diminished or destroyed.Unfortunately, parents and teachers often fail to realize the significance of these qualities. Because early childhood is a time when much fundamental information must be absorbed and mastered, they concentrate exclusively on transmitting basic skills and knowledge to the children in their charge. Consequently, they focus |

A Young Girl’s Diary $7.32 This diary is a gem. Never before, I believe, has anything been written enabling us to see so clearly into the soul of a young girl, belonging to our social and cultural stratum, during the years of puberal development. We are shown how the sentiments pass from the simple egoism of childhood to attain maturity; how the relationships to parents and other members of the family first shape themselves, and how they gradually become more serious and more intimate; how friendships are formed and broken. We are shown the dawn of love, feeling out towards its first objects. Above all, we are shown how the mystery of the sexual life first presses itself vaguely on the attention, and then takes entire possession of the growing intelligence, so that the child suffers under the load of secret knowledge but gradually becomes enabled to shoulder the burden. Of all these things we have a description at once so charming, so serious, and so artless, that it cannot fail to be of supreme interest to educationists and psychologists. |

Ameliorating Mental Disability $69.95 This book grows out of the optimistic view that mental retardation can be treated. It views mental retardation primarily as a behavioral problem. A child is diagnosed as retarded primarily because he behaves in certain maladaptive ways, not simply because he may have a chromosomal anomaly. The contributors view any intervention intended to produce adaptive changes in the behavior of the retarded as "treatment." The authors come from the fields of medicine, special education, and speech and hearing, as well as from psychology. The book is intended to help students and workers in the field apply research findings and theoretical formulations in their appraisal and treatment of mental retardation. The primary emphasis of the book is empirical. While many of the author’s suggestions have not been subjected to rigorous experimental scrutiny, almost all have been derived from close examination of the research literature. A wide diversity of topics are included in this volume. Criteria employed were the relevance of the topic to the understanding and modification of defective behavior; and the subject’s popularity or neglect in other sources. Ameliorating Mental Disability will be of interest to medical officers in institutions for the mentally challenged, lecturers giving courses for teachers of the educationally subnormal, and to psychologists, social workers, and teachers. |

Analysis of the Under-Five Child $49.8 Emotional problems in children age five to six or younger are too often misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or simply neglected. Even for those children who do receive attention, it is frequently inadequate. To assume, however, that prelatency children are too young to treat, particularly with psychoanalysis, is mistaken, the contributors to this book argue. They present detailed case studies of the psychoanalytic treatment of children as young as two years old, and they offer extended discussions of some of the issues raised by the treatment of prelatency children. This is the first book to deal exclusively with the psychoanalysis of small children. The contributors, well-known analysts and authorities in their field, examine the cases of eight prelatency children. The cases support the notion that psychoanalysis by a properly trained analyst can provide the most effective, rapid, and long-lasting treatment for young children. Early psychoanalysis can also avert the need for later treatment, when success is generally much more difficult to achieve. Psychoanalysts, psychologists, pediatricians, counselors, and others interested in the emotional well-being of young children will find in this deeply informed book a wealth of information on current theory and technique of analysis of preschool children.Author Biography: Robert L. Tyson, M.D., is clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. He is also training and supervising analyst, adult and child, at the San Diego Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and past president of The Association for Child Psychoanalysis. |

Anytime Playdate: Inside the Preschool Entertainment Boom, Or, How Television Became My Baby’s Best Friend $16.99 In this eye-opening book, the first to investigate the explosion of the multibillion-dollar preschool entertainment business and its effects on families, Dade Hayes — an entertainment expert, author, and concerned father — lifts the veil on the closely guarded process of marketing to the ultra-young and their parents. Like many parents, Dade Hayes grabbed “me time” by plopping his daughter in front of the TV, relaxing while Margot delighted in the sights and sounds of Barney and the Teletubbies. But when Margot got hooked, screaming whenever the TV was turned off, Hayes set out to explore the vast universe of this industry in which preschoolers devour $21 billion worth of entertainment. Going behind the scenes to talk with executives, writers, and marketers who see the value of educational TV, Hayes finds compelling research that watching TV may raise IQs and increase vocabularies. On the other side, he brings in the voices of pediatricians and child psychologists who warn against “babysitter TV” and ask whether “TV trance” is healthy — in spite of the relaxation that the lull affords exhausted parents — as recent studies link early television viewing with obesity, attention and cognitive problems, and violence. Along the way, Hayes narrates the fascinating evolution of Nickelodeon’s bilingual preschool gamble, Ni Hao, Kai-lan, from an art student’s Internet doodles to its final product: an educationally fortified, Dora-inflected, test audience-approved television show. At the show’s debut, jittery experts hold their breath as the tweaked and researched Kai-lan faces Mr. Potato Head in the battle for a three-year-old’s attention. Anytime Playdate reveals the marketing science of capturing a toddler’s attention, examining whether Baby Einstein and its ilk will make babies smarter, or if, conversely, television makes babies passive and uncritical, their imaginations colonized by marketing schemes before they |

Changing Welfare $1.99 Changing Welfare is concerned with the sweeping changes that took place in public assistance programs at the end of the 20th century and the way in which the original and reformed versions of these programs relate to the well-being of children and their families. The authors critically review the original conceptualizations and the new directions of programs offering cash assistance, food assistance, health insurance, and child protection services to low-income and disabled children and their families – thus, changes in the welfare programs themselves. And throughout, their concern is with whether and how these programs alter the opportunities for the development of the children targeted by these programs – thus, changes in the welfare of children and their families. The objective of each chapter of the book is to rigorously highlight key theoretical and research issues, including the identification of major empirical findings and unanswered questions. Wherever relevant, the chapters connect theory and research to policy and practice, pointing to recommendations and challenges for the future including alternative approaches for research, policy and practice.Changing Welfare is a valuable reference for practitioners and policy makers who are concerned with children and child-related issues, psychologists, sociologists, social workers, social program administrators, and students in psychology, social work, sociology, political science, and education. |

Child Maltreatment and the Law: Returning to First Principles $42.59 Dramatic cases of child abuse and neglect are featured with tragic regularity in the news. The stories vividly demonstrate both the urgent need for improved child protection services and the unwieldiness and ineffectiveness of the systems charged with the task. To complicate matters further, the original intent of child welfare policy is becoming increasingly obscured as legal responses to child maltreatment become more complex, intrusive, and even contradictory.Fueled by a consistent narrative and a lucid ethical stance, Child Maltreatment and the Law analyzes the increasing role legal systems play in family life and traces rapidly evolving legal concepts as they apply to child protection. This unique volume helps readers:Navigate the various layers of legal regulation – federal and state – involved in child protection and family life.Identify variations and discrepancies in definitions of maltreatment and legal responses. Critique the relationships and boundary disputes between the criminal and civil justice systems and agencies dedicated to children’s welfare. Analyze controversies (e.g., removing children from maltreating families) and other prime areas for possible reform. Child Maltreatment and the Law is a must-read for psychologists, developmentalists, sociologists, social workers, criminologists, and researchers focusing on family life as well as policymakers and advocates working within the legal system. The book is particularly useful for courses relating to child welfare law or child abuse and neglect. |

Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities: Part I: Assessing Part II: Treating $256.59 The field of child psychopathology and developmental disabilities is expanding rapidly. As a result, many researchers and most clinicians are having greater difficulty keeping up with these rapid advancements. Twenty years ago, psychologists, child psychiatrists, educational counselors, and other child professionals could consult a few journals to obtain current research developments. But this is no longer possible, because the proliferation of specialty journals (e.g., multiple journals on single childhood disorders – such as autism and ADHD) has enhanced the need for more – and more frequent – editions of books specifically designed to summarize the research. Assessment and treatment using evidence-based methods are the proposed topics of this two-volume set. |

Childhood Social Development: Contemporary Perspectives $60 This book provides an account of research in action and debate in progress in a selection of areas of childhood social development where significant progress is underway. The chapters are written by an eminent group of British and American developmental psychologists each of whom has made primary contributions to research in the areas covered in the volume. The contributors were invited to reflect upon the current scene in social developmental research and to develop their own distinctive viewpoint and contribution to the field. The book addresses issues in social development from infancy to adolescence. The topics examined include: interactions between biological and social factors in social development; sex role development; the development of friendships; the role of peer interaction in social and cognitive development; and the influence of cultural artifacts in the social and cognitive development of children. Although each chapter is concerned with a different aspect of social development, there are a number of themes that recur throughout the volume. One concerns the nature of social development: the acquisition of social understanding and the development of social skills are not individual achievements of children reared in isolation. Rather, they are the outcome of social processes in which the developing child engages, sometimes in an unequal partnership with experienced adults; at other times in more equal partnership with peers and playmates. In both cases the development change is a constructive outcome. A second recurrent theme is a concern for developmental researchers to take fuller account than they may traditionally have done of the nature of the cultural settings in which social development occurs. Different cultures have different customs and artifacts, and these can constrain development in different ways. This issue is considered throughout the book and is the specific focus of the final chapter. |

Childhood Stress $1.99 Childhood Stress It is surprising in a society so confident of its extraordinary concern for the health and well-being of its young, that so little attention is paid to the often devastating effects of stress on children and adolescents. While both the popular and professional media have been abuzz, over the past decade, with news about stress in adults, it is only recently that stress in childhood and adolescence has begun to receive the attention it deserves. Childhood Stress, therefore, represents a publishing event of the first order for all child helping professionals. It offers the most complete and timely coverage of the major stressors among children and adolescents and their role in a variety of psychological, physical, developmental, and educational problems. As a consequence, it also has the further virtue of being the only inter-professional guide available useful to psychologists and social workers, physicians, nurses, educators and all childcare professionals. It can even be an invaluable resource for attorneys and providers of pastoral care. Childhood Stress is divided into four sections, the first section covering the biological and psychosocial aspects of stress and their interactions. The effects of stress on the developing brain, the neuroendocrine substrate of stress reactions, and psychosomatic reactions to stress are discussed, as are psychological coping and symptom formation. The second section is devoted entirely to a detailed examination of stressors typically encountered at various developmental stages, as well as age-typical methods for coping with them. Section three goes into greater depth focusing on a number of specific stressors—including divorce, death or illness of a parent, abuse, poverty, social violence, and illness, injury and disability. The fourth section considers risk and protective factors in the assessment of stress as a basis for prevention and treatment. Extremely well-referenced and crafted for use by all |

Children at Play: An American History $2.33 Hear the author interview on NPR’s Morning EditionIf you believe the experts, “child’s play”; is serious business. From sociologists to psychologists and from anthropologists to social critics, writers have produced mountains of books about the meaning and importance of play. But what do we know about how children actually play, especially American children of the last two centuries? In this fascinating and enlightening book, Howard Chudacoff presents a history of children’s play in the United States and ponders what it tells us about ourselves.Through expert investigation in primary sources-including dozens of children’s diaries, hundreds of autobiographical recollections of adults, and a wealth of child—rearing manuals—along with wide—ranging reading of the work of educators, journalists, market researchers, and scholars-Chudacoff digs into the “underground” of play. He contrasts the activities that genuinely occupied children’s time with what adults thought children should be doing. Filled with intriguing stories and revelatory insights, Children at Play provides a chronological history of play in the U.S. from the point of view of children themselves. Focusing on youngsters between the ages of about six and twelve, this is history “from the bottom up.” It highlights the transformations of play that have occurred over the last 200 years, paying attention not only to the activities of the cultural elite but to those of working-class men and women, to slaves, and to Native Americans. In addition, the author considers the findings, observations, and theories of numerous social scientists along with those of fellow historians.Chudacoff concludes that children’s ability to play independently has attenuated over time and that in our modern era this diminution has frequently had unfortunate consequences. By examining the activities of young people whom marketers today call |

Constructing a Mind A New Base for Psychoanalytic Theory $24.95 Can the Protomental System provide a new foundation for psychoanalytic theory?Constructing a Mind draws on psychoanalytic theories of mind and recent developments in cognitive science to present the Protomental System, a new and original explanatory theory of the development of the human mind. This book aims to move psychoanalytic theory away from its origins in Freud’s theory, towards a model which gives priority to cognition and memory. This, Antonio Imbasciati argues, will make possible a successful and productive integration of psychoanalysis with other areas of psychology. Subjects covered include:The mind as an information-processing systemConstructing the system: from fetus to baby, child, and finally adultThe caregiver relationship as a decoding system for information processingThe paranoid-schizoid metabolism of informationMemory of functions and memory traces of affectsInternal information generated by the systemThe depressive position and learning to knowReparation and thought. This thoughtful and thorough account of cognitive development provides a conceptual framework that succeeds in making some of the more complex areas of psychoanalytic theory more intelligible. Constructing a Mind will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and cognitive psychologists, especially those with an interest in neuropsychology and neonatal development. |
