Dealing with ADHD children is no easy task. After all you are contending with young people who have a biological problems with self regulation. It that is not enough your challenge of dealing with ADHD children is only made worse by the fact that their lack of self regulation has likely been with them since birth, thus they have not had enough time to develop coping strategies.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder begins before the age of 7 and causes a child substantial difficulty in two or more settings, usually home or school. These children struggle focusing their attention and controlling impulses, behaviors, and emotions. ADHD children normally struggle with their grades. This may be mostly due to their natural instinct to become easily distracted thus leaving schoolwork and homework assignments left half done, or unfinished. For this reason ADHD children require a quite distraction free place to study. If they do encounter failure, and many do, this often leads to an erosion of self confidence leading to self esteem problems.

So it is easy to see how the biggest hit to an ADHD child’s self esteem probably will come from school. Between peers, teachers, and failed schoolwork a student with ADHD will almost always have some degree of self esteem loss. For this reason in dealing with ADHD children a parent or teacher must make sure these children are allowed to spend at least some time working in areas where they are talented. By doing this you will be not only keeping your child’s self confidence from falling to new lows but may in fact rebuild much of what has been lost.

Another major area of concern for dealing with ADHD children is in the area of organization. ADHD individuals are notorious for their disorganization and this trait will likely be with them for the rest of their lives. But at least as a parent you can help them along and perhaps they will embrace some of your ideas to excel later in life.

One really good idea is to set aside a predetermined amount of time each day to go over what has happened and what needs to happen, as well as reining in any problem areas before they get out of control. It might be a good idea to frame this organizational time as family time, because most ADHD children must be gently steered into port rather than towed.

What else? For those ADHD children struggling with symptoms such as inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and low self esteem finding an effective treatment option may be another helpful tool for dealing with ADHD children. The most common form of treatment are prescription stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall and Vyvanse. While effective, all stimulant medications come with a number of serious label warnings. The risk of side effects, or perhaps lack of success with stimulants, has prompted many to investigate other options. A couple examples of this are Behavior Modification therapy and/or natural remedies. Natural remedies for ADHD are a side effect free way to address such problematic symptoms as inattention, distractibility, impulsivity, erratic behavior and hyperactivity and can be used both as a standalone treatment or as a compliment to other nonprescription alternatives.
