A Study Of Child-Nature From The Kindergarten Standpoint $15.51 Originally published in 1895. INTRODUCTION: In the educational world is growing the realization, in a practical way, that “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” The importance of the first years of a child’s life is beginning to be acknowledged; his physical welfare has become a recognized study, for it is seen that the health and strength of maturity depends upon this early growth. Until the time of Froebel, the founder of the Kindergarten system, scarcely any thought was given to the right or wrong training of the infants natural instincts; few people dreamed that this had aught to do with the development of character in succeeding years….. This early works is a fascinating look at the subject with much of the information still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to 1900’s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, |

Baby Pals $11.99 Baby Pals, the second “baby raising” game on Nintendo DS, has players adopting an infant and selecting its gender, physical attributes, and name. While the game doesn’t have an ending per se, the focus is guiding a baby through three distinct development stages. “Development” in Baby Pals involves completing an assortment of touch-screen teaching activities. Players must also keep a watchful eye on a baby’s cleanliness, food, play, and sleep levels. Failure to address a specific need will make the baby unhappy. Mini-games are also based on the baby’s needs. The stylus is used to dry babies, cut ingredients to prepare food, engage in games of patty cake or peek-a-boo, and help sheep reach the end of a maze to ensure a good night’s rest. Other activities include teaching the baby colors, sounds, body parts, crawling, and walking through various rhythmic and matching techniques. Hearts earned from happy infants can be redeemed for new baby supplies, clothing, hairstyles, and additional recipes to cook. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide |

Development of Sensory, Motor and Cognitive Capacities in Early Infancy: From Sensation to Cognition $87.28 Research on the development of human infants has revealed remarkable capacities in recent years. Instead of stressing the limitations of the newborn, the modern approach is now more optimistically based on an assessment of the adaptive capabilities of the infant. Innate endowment, coupled with interaction with the physical and social environment, enables a developmental transition from processes deeply rooted in early perception and action to the cognitive and language abilities typical of the toddler.; This book reviews a number of issues in early human development. It includes a reconceptualization of the role of perception at the origins of development, a reconciliation of psychophysical and ecological approaches to early face perception, and building bridges between biological and psychological aspects of development in terms of brain structure and function. Topics covered include basic exploratory processes of early visual systems in early perception and action; face perception in newborns, species typical aspects of human communication, imitation, perception of the phonetic structure of speech, origins of the pointing gesture, handedness origins and development, theoretical contributions on perception and cognition, implicit and explicit knowledge in babies; sensory-motor coordination and cognition, information processing and cognition, perception, habituation and the development of intelligence from infancy. |

Tender Years: Toward Developmentally Sensitive Child Welfare Services for Very Young Children $1.99 The first few years of life are a time of unparalleled physical, intellectual, and emotional development. But they can also be a time of neglect and abuse: this is the period when children are most likely to suffer mistreatment by their parents, and most likely to be placed in foster care. Today most children entering the child welfare system are very young, and, in most large states, infants are the largest group of children entering foster care each year. Social service systems are typically not designed for very young children, however, and therefore fail to serve their special needs. This shortcoming is significant because protecting very young children from physical harm is not enough; they must also be protected from developmental harm. The Tender Years is the first textbook to address this critical situation. Beginning with an overview of child development theory, it examines child abuse reporting patterns and discusses placement in foster care, reunification, and adoption. It also looks at public child welfare practice, featuring vivid examples of the children and families served by this system. The authors analyze the differences between the foster care experiences of very young children and those of older children, with special emphasis on the way the child welfare system deals with infants. Based on a significant body of evidence regarding young children’s unique affective, physical, and cognitive development, this text illuminates the interrelationship of child welfare practice, child development outcomes, and public policy. The authors offer a fundamental framework for decision-making in child welfare when young children are involved, and recommend specific changes in policy and practice aimed at moving the system toward greater developmental sensitivity.Timely and provocative, The Tender Years is essential reading for courses in child welfare, social work with children, and social work with the family, as well as a valuable |
