Preschool Behavior Plan?
I have been assigned the wonderful task of writing a behavior plan for a special needs preschool (this is so not in my job description!) The first step is identifying the goals of the program… so far I have sitting, eye contact, 1 step directions, attend to task for an average of 15 minutes and finish a task…I get the idea they want more than that though. Has anyone out there wrote a plan before or can any preschool disabled teachers give me ideas for approriate goals.
The next step will be forming a plan on how to deal with negative behaviors, hitting, screaming, etc. Any advice on that topic would be appreciated, but for right now I am focusing on goals.
Thanks in advance!
Goals–
self help skills-
beginning of the day —the children taking off their own coats, putting them in the locker, taking notebook out of bookbag, putting it in a assigned place, putting bookbag in locker, close locker, walk into classroom.
play time—pick out own toy off shelf, must play with toy properly, maybe socially, maybe alone,
art time—follow directions on where to cut-stay on black line, you may have a goal for Susie to use a certain type of scissors.
there maybe directions on where to glue certain items.
circle time– sitting, eyes on teacher, answering questions,
bathroom— toilet training–pulling down own pants, sitting on toilet, pulling up pants, go to sink, pull up sleaves, turn water on, get hands wet, get soap, rub in the water, get paper towel, dry hands, put in trash
walking in hall–hands behind back, stay in line
snack time–try new foods, use a spoon, drink out of regular cup, throw away trash.
end of the day — go to locker, get out coat and bookbag, go to mail box ect.
You can make goals for communication. Use so much sign language, picture cards, The children have to ask for snack, help, ect.
If your program has goods transitions with pictures, routines, ect. negative behaviors will be less. You will be dealing with so many different disabilites which come with so many different behavior issues. You have to deal with all of them differently. If you have a child with ODD, it’s a daily guessing game how to handle behavior. A hearing impaired child you need to be very firm with or they don’t get it, facial expression has to mean business. Some children you can put in time out for a very short time and it works. Some children with sesory issues you have to apply pressure on them, like wrap a blanket around them. We’ve used charts and rewards. Like I said it’s a big guessing game. They have to know who is in charge.
I hope some of this will help.

A Parents’ Guide to Dealing With a Child’s Anger During Infancy, Toddlerhood and the Preschool Years $4.99 “I hate you!” No other words uttered by a young child can cause as much damage to the morale of her mother and father. After nurturing, worrying and encouraging, parents are prepared for an “I love you!” and a hug, but they rarely are ready for – and thus are extremely vulnerable to – any kind of venomous attack from their infant, toddler or preschooler. Numerous displays of affection can never completely compensate for the terrible pain resulting from a single angry comment.Prior to one year of age, a child will become upset from time to time, and she will express her distress in no uncertain terms, but at this point in development, her feelings are largely reflexive and her reactions are generally unfocused. Therefore, while her behavior may generate concern, it usually will not cause dismay. After the first birthday, however, things change. Gradually, the child starts to formulate genuine discontent, and she begins to direct her displeasure toward particular people. As her physical and mental capacities grow, and her social and emotional experiences become more complex, her expressions of anger steadily increase in variety and sophistication. Consequently, mothers and fathers can suffer all sorts of unpleasantness from their offspring, from the tantrums of their two-year-old, through the sulking of their four-year-old, to the verbal assaults of their six-year-old.Dealing appropriately with a young child’s anger is one of the more difficult tasks of parenting, and one of the more important tasks, as well. Occasional ill feelings are an inevitable part of life, but chronic unpleasantness is hazardous to everyone’s psychological health. When suitably channeled, displeasure can produce constructive action, but uncontrolled displays of discontent can be destructive.Proper coping involves diverse considerations and calls for different strategies |

A functionalist perspective of language ability and behavioral synchrony in the development of emotion regulation. $49.99 The current study sought to expand and replicate the literature demonstrating the biological risk and environmental factors that contribute to the development of emotion regulation in children. This research sought to examine the extent to which children’s language and dyadic relationship factors function to facilitate emotion regulation and impact behavior problems in preschool-age children born LBW (low birthweight). Sixty-eight mother-child dyads (40 pre-term and 28 full-term) between the ages of 3 and 4 years of age from Upstate New York participated in this study. Dyads engaged in a laboratory—based frustration task and completed an indice of child behavior problems. Children were administered an assessment of cognitive functioning in which an indice of verbal ability was examined. Results revealed significant correlations between verbal ability and behavior problems as well as behavioral synchrony and negative emotion regulation. One-way ANCOVAs demonstrated a significant group difference in verbal ability. Pre-term children demonstrated lower verbal ability scores as compared to full-term children. Verbal ability predicted attention problems, emotion reactivity, and externalizing problems for LBW children but not full-term children. For the LBW sample, the attention problem score was related to the proportion of sadness displayed and for the full-term sample, the proportion of neutral affect displayed was related to verbal ability scores. Behavior synchrony moderated the relationship between verbal ability and negative emotion regulation but not positive emotion regulation such that at high levels of behavioral synchrony, verbal ability increased as the ability to regulate negative affect increased. The results of the present study provide evidence and support the literature that demonstrates the importance of understanding the functional role of language and dyadic relations in the development of emotion regulation and behavior problems. |

Awakening Children’s Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference $21.95 Parents and teachers today face a swirl of conflicting theories about child rearing and educational practice. Indeed, current guides are contradictory, oversimplified, and at odds with current scientific knowledge. Now, in Awakening Children’s Minds, Laura Berk cuts through the confusion of competing theories, offering a new way of thinking about the roles of parents and teachers and how they can make a difference in children’s lives. This is the first book to bring to a general audience, in lucid prose richly laced with examples, truly state-of-the-art thinking about child rearing and early education. Berk’s central message is that parents and teachers contribute profoundly to the development of competent, caring, well-adjusted children. In particular, she argues that adult-child communication in shared activities is the wellspring of psychological development. These dialogues enhance language skills, reasoning ability, problem-solving strategies, the capacity to bring action under the control of thought, and the child’s cultural and moral values. Berk explains how children weave the voices of more expert cultural members into dialogues with themselves. When puzzling, difficult, or stressful circumstances arise, children call on this private speech to guide and control their thinking and behavior. In addition to providing clear roles for parents and teachers, Berk also offers concrete suggestions for creating and evaluating quality educational environments–at home, in child care, in preschool, and in primary school–and addresses the unique challenges of helping children with special needs. Parents, Berk writes, need a consistent way of thinking about their role in children’s lives, one that can guide them in making effective child-rearing decisions. Awakening Children’s Minds gives us the basic guidance we need to raise caring, thoughtful, intelligent children. |
