social child development
What activities or teaching strategies would a teacher use for social Emotional Development for child has IEP?

She is in Preschool and has an IEP because delays in her development

If it is just academically she is behind, but is okay socially, I would continue with regular pre-school. Have group activities, kids playing together, etc.

Know the Signs Part 2 – Social/Emotional Development Milestones

''If you give Allison a book...'': A toddler's aesthetic responses to literature experiences.

”If you give Allison a book…”: A toddler’s aesthetic responses to literature experiences.

$49.99

This case study narrates the depth and breadth of aesthetic responses to literature demonstrated by Allison between the ages of twenty and thirty months. By exploring and analyzing ways in which Allison was engaged in literacy experiences I provide insight into the types of responses to literature that are possible, especially from very young children. Observational data in the form of anecdotal and analytic journal entries was recorded and used to provide information about the following three research questions: What types of social practices encapsulate Allison’s experiences with literature? In what ways is Allison involved in aesthetic transactions with texts? What kind of literature is appealing to Allison and other toddlers?;Patterns emerged from a retrospective, thematic analysis of the entries. Allison’s aesthetic responses to literature were categorized into the following five types: Socially Constructed Responses, Dramatic Responses, Emotional Responses, Responses that Explore a Child’s World, and Intertextual Responses. The theoretical framework for this study drew largely on prior studies in the field of emergent literacy, reader response theory, and aesthetics. This study’s findings inform an understanding of early literacy development, literature discussion, and response issues in schools.;Conclusions are as follows: Allison’s experiences with text were imbedded within the social practices of her family; background knowledge and prior experiences informed her responses by providing points of reference for her to appreciate and enjoy literary experiences; and enriched, aesthetic responses to literature are possible as rich, life experiences are called upon through interpersonal interactions. Drama, including role-play, engaged Allison in exploring aesthetics and aesthetic practices, was an opportunistic venue for Allison to aesthetically respond to literature beyond the limits of her expressive language skills, and was a powerful medium through which

''Mandela went to China...and India too'': Musical cultures of childhood in South Africa.

”Mandela went to China…and India too”: Musical cultures of childhood in South Africa.

$49.99

The cultural landscape of South Africa is reflected in the songs and games of young children whose music often embodies the social and political history of the world around them. My research with young children in the Limpopo province of South Africa is indicative of how children of similar ages identify with the idea of South Africa as a nation and how children use music as an educational tool to engage with their social and cultural identities.;This dissertation examines how music, education and the media impact the culture of childhood in South Africa and draws on the political and social history of South Africa that is enmeshed in the musical education of children today. The purpose of the study is to understand how young children utilize and experience music as a tool to explore, and consequently educate themselves in relationship to their social and cultural histories. Based on scholarship that bridges the fields of music education, sociology, child development, media studies and ethnomusicology, this dissertation aims to outline how children’s musical cultures are not mere copycats of adult musical systems, but rather intricate memes, or units of cultural information, that are propagated and sustained within the culture of childhood.;Contributing to an understanding of the role of music in children’s lives in Limpopo, this dissertation examines how music contributes to identity formation in childhood. This process is explored through an examination of local, national and global influences on the musical language of childhood in South Africa. From handclapping songs to traditional music, from commercials to programs such as Takalani Sesame, the musical worlds of children in Limpopo give voice to an understanding of how children engage with and sustain unique musical cultures.

''Safety first'': Childhood maltreatment, attachment, and cognitive processing: A mediation model.

”Safety first”: Childhood maltreatment, attachment, and cognitive processing: A mediation model.

$49.99

Childhood maltreatment is a pervasive problem, with severe developmental consequences across multiple domains. A growing body of empirical evidence indicates that there are critical periods in childhood during which the experience of maltreatment has a profound impact on the developing brain. The developing brain drives cognitive, emotional, social, and psychological development and functioning; thus, understanding the relationship among environmental interactions and the subsequent impact on childhood neurodevelopment can provide insights into how the maltreated child self-regulates social and emotional experiences (such as attachment and interpersonal relationships) and processes information (such as auditory verbal information within social and therapeutic relationships). Those insights can inform the design of more effective treatment approaches for maltreated children that promise to more effectively reduce the long-term impact of the multiple developmental sequelae associated with maltreatment.;This dissertation investigates the interface between childhood relational maltreatment, attachment, and cognitive processing, specifically: auditory and language processing. A sample of 117 incarcerated male adolescents, mean age of 17, from a Midwestern detention center participated in a survey study. The central hypothesis of this study was that attachment acts as a mediator between early relational maltreatment and later deficits in cognitive processing, deficits that then have negative consequences to the social and emotional functioning.;A Structure Equation Modeling strategy was utilized to examine the role of attachment and cognitive processing deficits in child relational maltreatment. A significant relation was revealed between attachment on auditory processing as well as internalizing and externalizing behaviors including withdrawal, anxiety, social problems, and aggression. However, when attachment was held constant, the relation between child relational

 A Child's Right to a Healthy Environment

A Child’s Right to a Healthy Environment

$59.95

It’s a startling reality that more American children are victims—and perpetrators—of violence than those of any other developed country. Yet unlike the other nations, the United States has yet to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Compelling, readable, and interdisciplinary, A Child’s Right to a Healthy Environment provides an abundance of skilled observation, important findings, and keen insights to place children’s well-being in the vanguard of human rights concerns, both in the United States and globally.Within this volume, authors examine the impediments to the crucial goals of justice, safety, dignity, well-being, and meaning in children’s lives, factors as varied as socioeconomic stressors, alienated, disengaged parents, and corrosive moral lessons from the media. The complex role of religious institutions in promoting and, in many cases, curtailing children’s rights is analyzed, as are international efforts by advocates and policymakers to address major threats to children’s development, including:War and natural disasters.Environmental toxins (e.g., malaria and lead poisoning). The child obesity epidemic.Gun violence.Child slavery and trafficking.Toxic elements in contemporary culture.A Child’s Right to a Healthy Environment is a powerful call to action for researchers and professionals in developmental, clinical child, school, and educational psychology as well as psychiatry, pediatrics, social work, general and special education, sociology, and other fields tasked with improving children’s lives.

The buzz word in education today is accountability. But the federal mandate of “no child left behind” has come to mean curriculums driven by preparation for standardized tests and quantifiable learning results. Even for very young children, unstructured creative time in the classroom is waning as teachers and administrators are under growing pressures to measure school readiness through rote learning and increased homework. In her new book, Vivian Gussin Paley decries this rapid disappearance of creative time and makes the case for the critical role of fantasy play in the psychological, intellectual, and social development of young children.A Child’s Work goes inside classrooms around the globe to explore the stunningly original language of children in their role-playing and storytelling. Drawing from their own words, Paley examines how this natural mode of learning allows children to construct meaning in their worlds, meaning that carries through into their adult lives. Proof that play is the work of children, this compelling and enchanting book will inspire and instruct teachers and parents as well as point to a fundamental misdirection in today’s educational programs and strategies.

A Dynamic Cascade Model of the Development of Substance - Use Onset

A Dynamic Cascade Model of the Development of Substance – Use Onset

$19

Although the onset of illicit substance use during adolescence can hit parents abruptly like a raging flood, its origins likely start as a trickle in early childhood. Understanding antecedent factors and how they grow into a stream that leads to adolescent drug use is important for theories of social development as well as policy formulations to prevent onset. Based on a review of the extant literature, we posited a dynamic cascade model of the development of adolescent substance-use onset, specifying that (1) temporally distinct domains of biological factors, social ecology, early parenting, early conduct problems, early peer relations, adolescent parenting, and adolescent peer relations would predict early substance-use onset; (2) each domain would predict the temporally next domain; (3) each domain would mediate the impact of the immediately preceding domain on substance use; and (4) each domain would increment the previous domain in predicting substance use. The model was tested with a longitudinal sample of 585 boys and girls from the Child Development Project, who were followed from prekindergarten through Grade 12. Multiple variables in each of the seven predictor domains were assessed annually through direct observations, testing, peer nominations, school records, and parent-, teacher-, and self-report. Partial least-squares analyses tested hypotheses. Of the sample, 5.2% had engaged in substance use by Grade 7, and 51.3% of the sample had engaged in substance use by Grade 12. Five major empirical findings emerged: (1) Most variables significantly predicted early substance-use onset; (2) predictor variables were significantly related to each other in a web of correlations; (3) variables in each domain were significantly predicted by variables in the temporally prior domain; (4) each domain’s variables significantly mediated the impact of the variables in the temporally prior domain on substance-use outcomes; and (5) variables in each domain

The social and cognitive development of children is a complex yet crucial process for parents to understand, and though there are numerous books on child development, A Good Start in Life stands out from the rest as an acclaimed and important work on the connections between childhood brain and behavioral development. This new paperback edition, updated with the latest information and new material, offers parents and educators a rich and invaluable resource on how children learn to live in family and society from birth to age six. Norbert Herschkowitz, MD, and his wife Elinore Chapman Herschkowitz draw on their lifetime of experience in studying infants and children to explain how brain development shapes a child’s personality and behavior. Organizing their narrative by age, the authors examine a wide range of social development issues, from appropriate rule-setting to the development of key character elements in a child such as moral sensibility, temperament, language development, playing, aggression, impulse control, and empathy. Some of the most popular features of the hardcover edition are retained here, including the question-and-answer section that concludes each chapter with real questions posed by parents to Dr. Herschkowitz, as well as brain maps and charts that display milestones in the development of various skills. Additional new material addresses concerns about prematurely born babies and the issue of resilience in children. In today’s world, children grow up in an incredibly complex and highly sensory environment. A Good Start in Life offers a clear, concise, and richly detailed guide infused with warmth and encouragement that enables parents and educators to constructively stimulate and shape their children’s cognitive and social development.“A must read . . . a gift to all parents.”—Rosemarie T. A Life Course Approach to Women's Health

A Life Course Approach to Women’s Health

$125

How far is the health of middle aged and older women shaped by biological, social, and psychological processes that begin in pre-natal development, in childhood, adolescence, or early adult life? Do health risks gradually accumulate over the life course or do mentioned factors as a child and young adult have interactive effects on health in midlife and beyond? Are women now reaching middle age in better health than previous generations? A group of international experts critically review the latest scientific evidence on biological and social factors at each stage of life that have long-term effects on reproductive outcomes, breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal ageing, depression, body weights and body dissatisfaction. There is growing evidence that the sources of risk to physical and mental health occur across the course of life, not just in adult life, and in some instances reach right back to pre-natal development, or the previous generation. Contributors draw on their varied expertise in epidemiology, endocrinology, physiology, developmental psychology, sociology, and anthropology to identify the pathways that link early life experiences, reproductive events, adult lifestyle and lifetime socio-economic circumstances to later health. A Life Course Approach looks for connections between development and ageing, and between the childhood and adult social environment. It is scientifically interesting, conceptually and methodologically challenging, inherently interdisciplinary, and policy relevant. This thoughtful book will appeal to all with a professional or personnal interest in understanding the origins of women’s health.

A Lifetime of Communication Transformations Through Relational Dialogues

A Lifetime of Communication Transformations Through Relational Dialogues

$136.95

A Lifetime of Communication explores the developmental processes that make for uniquely human change and growth. In this distinctive work, author Julie Yingling utilizes a single case example of a child, her parents, and other influential figures to demonstrate developmental interaction and transformational life events. Using relational and dialogic perspectives, Yingling follows the child from infancy into adolescence and adulthood, through the stages which the child acquires the means to communicate, to form and develop through relationships, to build human cognitive processes, and to understand the self as a responsible part of the social world. The work presents traditional and cutting-edge developmental theories as well as current research and relational perspectives in a palatable framework, employing a case example from a person’s life at the start of each content chapter. Yingling examines communication and cognition in the various stages of human development, making connections between communication, relationships, and maturation. She also distinguishes the biological and physiological portions of development from those that are relational and self-directed. She concludes the volume with a summary of relational dialogical theory and a discussion of the implications of this perspective of development-both for the future of communication study and for personal growth. This monograph offers many new insights to scholars in human development, relationships, family studies, social psychology, and others interested in communication and relationships across the life span. It is also appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in relationships, developmental communication, and relational communication.

A Parents' Guide to Dealing With a Child's Anger During Infancy, Toddlerhood and the Preschool Years

A Parents’ Guide to Dealing With a Child’s Anger During Infancy, Toddlerhood and the Preschool Years

$4.99

“I hate you!” No other words uttered by a young child can cause as much damage to the morale of her mother and father. After nurturing, worrying and encouraging, parents are prepared for an “I love you!” and a hug, but they rarely are ready for – and thus are extremely vulnerable to – any kind of venomous attack from their infant, toddler or preschooler. Numerous displays of affection can never completely compensate for the terrible pain resulting from a single angry comment.Prior to one year of age, a child will become upset from time to time, and she will express her distress in no uncertain terms, but at this point in development, her feelings are largely reflexive and her reactions are generally unfocused. Therefore, while her behavior may generate concern, it usually will not cause dismay. After the first birthday, however, things change. Gradually, the child starts to formulate genuine discontent, and she begins to direct her displeasure toward particular people. As her physical and mental capacities grow, and her social and emotional experiences become more complex, her expressions of anger steadily increase in variety and sophistication. Consequently, mothers and fathers can suffer all sorts of unpleasantness from their offspring, from the tantrums of their two-year-old, through the sulking of their four-year-old, to the verbal assaults of their six-year-old.Dealing appropriately with a young child’s anger is one of the more difficult tasks of parenting, and one of the more important tasks, as well. Occasional ill feelings are an inevitable part of life, but chronic unpleasantness is hazardous to everyone’s psychological health. When suitably channeled, displeasure can produce constructive action, but uncontrolled displays of discontent can be destructive.Proper coping involves diverse considerations and calls for different strategies

A Parents' Guide to Promoting Social Skill Development During Infancy and Toddlerhood

A Parents’ Guide to Promoting Social Skill Development During Infancy and Toddlerhood

$4.99

In order to be truly successful in life, being personally secure and intellectually adept is not enough. Because every individual must operate as part of a larger society, it is necessary to be socially skillful as well; and, as is the case with most of an individual’s characteristics, the roots of interpersonal proficiency form during infancy and toddlerhood.Unfortunately, social skills occupy a somewhat strange position in early development. While effective interactions with other people rest upon solid “psychological” foundations, they are essentially “intellectual” exercises. On the other hand, although effective interactions with other people require certain mental capabilities, they involve applying those capacities to a very special set of objects, concepts and circumstances.Since social skills fall into this “in-between” area, even the most alert and concerned mothers and fathers often overlook them. Most children emerge from the early years armed with ample abilities for coping with how the physical world works. However, far too few have been equipped with superb abilities for dealing with the people who populate that world. That is not to say most mothers and fathers neglect the “non-intellectual” aspects of early development. Parents generally recognize that their child must learn to value herself, and they pay attention to nurturing emotional security and self-esteem. They also recognize that their child must learn to control herself, and they employ suitable disciplinary procedures. They further recognize that their child must be “socialized” to a certain extent, so they take plenty of time to teach proper eating, dressing and toileting techniques.Nonetheless, many parents fail to realize that it is during infancy and toddlerhood that their child must start to learn how to interact with her fellow human beings.

A Short History of Mathematical Population Dynamics

A Short History of Mathematical Population Dynamics

$28.12

As Eugene Wigner stressed, mathematics has proven unreasonably effective in the physical sciences and their technological applications. The role of mathematics in the biological, medical and social sciences has been much more modest but has recently grown thanks to the simulation capacity offered by modern computers. This book traces the history of population dynamics—a theoretical subject closely connected to genetics, ecology, epidemiology and demography—where mathematics has brought significant insights. It presents an overview of the genesis of several important themes: exponential growth, from Euler and Malthus to the Chinese one-child policy; the development of stochastic models, from Mendel’s laws and the question of extinction of family names to percolation theory for the spread of epidemics, and chaotic populations, where determinism and randomness intertwine. The reader of this book will see, from a different perspective, the problems that scientists face when governments ask for reliable predictions to help control epidemics (AIDS, SARS, swine flu), manage renewable resources (fishing quotas, spread of genetically modified organisms) or anticipate demographic evolutions such as aging.

 A Social History of Psychology

A Social History of Psychology

$64.95

A Social History of Psychology documents the rise of psychology in the twentieth century and its growing influence on Western society. The book focuses on practical, or “applied”, psychology and examines the causes and social consequences of psychology’s omnipresence in society. After a general overview of the history of psychology as a practical discipline, the book provides detailed accounts of the role of psychology in the fields of child rearing and education, work, mental health care, culture and ethnicity, delinquency and law, and attitudes and social orientations. Focusing on psychology as a social enterprise, A Social History of Psychology is a unique resource for understanding the history and development of contemporary psychology.
