Aggressive Child Behavior

aggressive child behavior
When aggressive behavior first emerges in children?

When aggressive behavior first emerges in children and changes across childhood, adolescence and adulthood, how does it get “overlooked” by parents and caregivers until it’s at an explosive point of destruction?

They don’t know how to be parents instead of friends. They’re afraid that real discipline might cause the child to not like them anymore. This is what happens when society confuses parenthood and socialization. Then when the children are out of control teens, the public has to pick up the tab.
When my cousins and I were children, my grandmother would make us pick out our own switch from the yard if we were bad at her house. It didn’t happen very often because she made it bad enough that we weren’t interested in getting it again any time soon. When she died a few years ago, not one person had anything bad to say about her. Obviously her discipline didn’t cause us to hate her.

Children's Moral Emotions and Moral Cognition: Developmental and Educational Perspectives

Children’s Moral Emotions and Moral Cognition: Developmental and Educational Perspectives

$29

Children’s emerging morality involves the development of moral emotions and moral cognition. Developmental research suggests that emotions play an important role in dealing with moral conflict situations, and they help children differentiate moral concepts from other social judgments. However, emotions and their role in moral cognition and moral behavior have yet to be addresses systematically in empirical research. In this volume, the authors show how integrative developmental research on children’s moral emotions and moral cognition can help us understand how children’s morality evolves. As both moral emotions and moral cognition are related to children’s moral, prosocial behavior, as well as to their immoral, aggressive behavior, studying how moral emotions and moral cognition interact is not only of conceptual significance to developmental researchers, but also of practical importance to educators. A central premise of the volume is that moral emotions interact with moral cognition in different ways across development. An integrative developmental perspective on moral emotions and moral cognition thus offers an important conceptual framework for understanding children’s emerging morality and designing developmentally sensitive moral intervention strategies. The authors summarize the empirical literature linking moral emotions to moral cognition and discuss promising conceptual avenues and methodological approaches to study children’s moral emotions and moral cognition. They also provide examples illustrating how the principles of integrative moral education can be applied in educational practice. This is the 129th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. The mission of New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in the field of child and adolescent development. Coping Power Child Group Prgram

Coping Power Child Group Prgram

$20.6

This program is an evidence-based intervention for behavioral in pre-adolescent children (grades 5 and 6). Continuing the work of the Fast Track Program, currently under contract, this intervention targets children who are beginning to show signs of severe aggression and social dysfunction at school. Children who begin to exhibit aggression as pre-adolescents are much more likely to have histories of substance abuse, interpersonal violence, and criminal behavior in their adolescence. By targeting these children before their behavior has become extremely dangerous or unmanageable, this program has been proven to reduce the occurence of these programs, and to improve functioning in school. Studies have shown that children who demonstrate aggressive behaviors have maladaptive coping skills and misperceptions of conflict or threat. This program teaches positive strategies for coping with perceived conflict or threat, as well as an understanding of the participant’s feelings and motivations behind inappropriate behaviors. The Coping Power program involves an intervention with aggressive children and a simultaneous program for their parents, to increase positive motivations at home as well as at school. The facilitator’s guide includes step-by-step instructions for accurately implementing this evidence-based program. This is the corresponding workbook for children which includes worksheets and monitoring forms to track progress and reinforce the skills learned in the group sessions.

Coping with relational aggression within children's close friendships.

Coping with relational aggression within children’s close friendships.

$49.99

Recent research suggests that when relational aggression occurs between close friends instead of the general peer group, it has a stronger negative impact on the social and emotional well-being for both the victim and the perpetrator. This dissertation explored children’s, parents’, and teachers’ perceptions of the frequency and the harmfulness of relational aggression within children’s close friendships. Child and parent self-report also served to explore perceptions of coping strategies used by children when faced with relational aggression within their close friendships. Data were collected in a low-income urban environment from 126 fourth- and fifth-grade children, their parents, and their teachers. Results revealed that: (1) Girls perceived relationally aggressive behaviors within their friendships as more harmful than boys; (2) parents rated physical and verbal aggression as more harmful than relationally aggressive behaviors, whereas both boys and the girls overwhelmingly reported relationally aggressive behaviors as more harmful than physically and verbally aggressive behavior; (3) parents and children reported similar rankings of the methods children use to cope; (4) lastly, most of the teachers felt that only female students, not male students, face relational aggression within their friendships. Overall, perceived harmfulness is related to how the child will cope with relational aggression, and gender was not related to coping strategy use. Moreover, there was a trend suggesting that African American children who perceived relational aggression as harmful were more likely to use aggressive coping strategies.

Although Jodie is only eight years old, she is violent, aggressive, and has already been through numerous foster families. Her last hope is Cathy Glass. At the Social Services office, Cathy (an experienced foster carer) is pressured into taking Jodie as a new placement. Jodie’s challenging behavior has seen off five carers in four months. Despite her reservations, Cathy decides to take on Jodie to protect her from being placed in an institution. Jodie arrives, and her first act is to soil herself, and then wipe it on her face, grinning wickedly. Jodie meets Cathy’s teenage children, and greets them with a sharp kick to the shins. That night, Cathy finds Jodie covered in blood, having cut her own wrist, and smeared the blood over her face. As Jodie begins to trust Cathy her behavior improves. Over time, with childish honesty, she reveals details of her abuse at the hands of her parents and others. It becomes clear that Jodie’s parents were involved in a sickening pedophile ring, with neighbors and Social Services not seeing what should have been obvious signs. Unfortunately Jodie becomes increasingly withdrawn, and it’s clear she needs psychiatric therapy. Cathy urges the Social Services to provide funding, but instead they decide to take Jodie away from her, and place her in a residential unit. Although the pedophile ring is investigated and brought to justice, Jodie’s future is still up in the air. Cathy promises that she will stand by her no matter what—er love for the abandoned Jodie is unbreakable.

Effects of mental health counseling for maltreated elementary school children.

Effects of mental health counseling for maltreated elementary school children.

$49.99

This study examined the effectiveness of mental health counseling for children in an elementary school in Miami, Florida. These children were identified as having been exposed to maltreatment, commonly referred to as "child abuse." This study of 20 students used both pre and post survey and student record data. The purpose of the study was to determine if mental health counseling was effective in helping abused children reduce their aggressive behavior in elementary schools so they do not end up in the juvenile justice system for violence, and in improving their academic performance. Children were assigned to two groups of 10 children each. One group received individual and group mental health counseling for several months. The other group received only those services regularly offered to all students. The groups were comparable before the study in demographic characteristics, extent of abuse, behaviors demonstrated, and academic performance. Because the children were not randomly assigned to the two conditions, however, the groups cannot be viewed as completely equivalent. In particular, the parents of the children in the regular services group did not follow through when counseling was recommended for their children. After the study, it was found that the students enrolled in mental health counseling significantly reduced their aggressive behavior, according to their parents, and increased their academic performance, according to school records. Therefore, it was concluded that mental health counseling appears to be effective in improving the behavior of elementary school children who have been exposed to maltreatment. More rigorous research studies with long-term follow-up to track behavior and academic performance are needed to further determine the impact of mental health counseling on maltreated children.

Maternal adolescent parenting behavior and child aggressive and inattentiveaggressive and inattentive behavior: Findings from the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation project.

Maternal adolescent parenting behavior and child aggressive and inattentiveaggressive and inattentive behavior: Findings from the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation project.

$49.99

Adolescent parenting is associated with a wide variety of risk factors for both the mother (Berlin, Brady-Smith, & Brooks-Gunn, 2002) and child (Moore & Brooks-Gunn, 2002). Understanding the pathways leading toward poor parenting practices, and the subsequent influences on child aggressive and inattentive behavior may yield important information for intervention efforts on the part of adolescent families. The current study examines which maternal characteristics influence parenting behavior in a high risk sample of adolescent mothers and their toddlers, using Belsky’s (1984) parenting process model. The purpose of the study was to: (1) examine whether maternal age, depression, or stress influenced positive and negative parenting behavior, (2) examine the influence of positive and negative parenting behavior on child aggressive and inattentive behavior, and (3) examine whether positive parenting would mediate the association between maternal characteristics and child aggressive and inattentive behavior. Data from the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation dataset was used to examine the aforementioned questions. The sample consisted of 319 mothers ages 15-19 and their toddlers ages 2-3 years. Heirarchical regression analyses revealed that maternal depression predicted higher levels of negative parenting behavior, younger adolescent mothers are more likely to engage in punitive parenting behavior than older adolescents, and maternal stress predicted lower levels of positive and higher levels of negative parenting behavior. Logistic regression analyses revealed that adolescent mothers who engaged in positive parenting behavior were less likely to have children who engaged in aggressive and inattentive behavior, and parents who engaged in negative parenting behavior were more likely to have children who engaged in aggressive and inattentive behavior. Mediational analyses revealed that positive parenting behavior mediated the association between maternal stress and

Parent Management Training: Treatment for Oppositional, Aggressive, and Antisocial Behavior in Children and Adolescents

Parent Management Training: Treatment for Oppositional, Aggressive, and Antisocial Behavior in Children and Adolescents

$29.95

Currently in the mental health professions, there is keen interest in evidence-based treatments. Among the psychotherapies for children and adolescents, parent management training (PMT) is without peer. No other treatment for children has been as thoroughly investigated, and as widely applied as has PMT. In this book, Dr. Alan Kazdin brings together the conceptual and empirical bases of this treatment, as applied to children and adolescents with oppositional, aggressive, and antisocial behavior. The book’s first half provides the background, principles, and concepts underlying PMT, detailing the clinical application of treatment with concrete examples of how therapists should work with parents and children. Kazdin also highlights the wide body of research on PMT to demonstrate the empirical basis of this intervention, to convey what is understood about how PMT works, and to identify what can be done to enhance the effects of treatment. The book’s second half is a treatment manual of PMT, as applied in outpatient treatment for children and adolescents referred for oppositional, aggressive, and antisocial behavior. The PMT manual, which in its entirety is included in the book, details the particulars of the therapy: what is done to and by whom, what is said by the therapist, and what to expect at each stage of treatment. It also contains handouts, charts, and aides for parents. Both halves of the book move from the general (background, principles, and theory) to the specific (e.g., techniques; dialogues among the therapist, parent, and child; and materials used in treatment). Informed by research, the book remains concrete and grounded in clinical realities. Alan Kazdin is one of the most respected clinical psychologists in the country and has dedicated over twenty years to research and treatment for children.

Preschool aggression within the social context: A study of families, teachers, and the classroom environment.

Preschool aggression within the social context: A study of families, teachers, and the classroom environment.

$49.99

The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the extent, if any, of possible relationships between child (gender and race), family (birth order, parental age at child’s birth, educational level, marital status, household income, and the biological father living in the home), teacher (proximity and perception), and classroom (global quality and location) variables and aggression (physical, relational, telling, and avoidance). Expulsions from preschool occur at an alarming rate due to aggressive acts in the classroom against peers and teachers. A total of thirty children and their families, six teachers, and three for-profit community child care centers participated in this naturalistic examination of aggression within the social context. Data collected using the Preschool Social Behavior Scales (Crick, Casas, & Mosher, 1997), the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale-Revised (ECERS-R) (Harms, Clifford, & Cryer, 1998), child observation log, and a family questionnaire provided a rich source of data from multiple informants. Pearson Moment Product Correlations and hierarchical linear regression were used to analyze existence of possible relationships. Consistent with previous studies, gender was a critical factor, as boys were more likely to exhibit physical aggression. Interestingly, child and family variables were not a factor in predicting aggression within the social context of the classroom. Rather, the findings suggested that teacher proximity was critical in the prediction of aggression in the classroom, as the teacher’s proximity increases so does the likelihood of aggression. Teachers and children agreed on children who were physically aggressive; however, they did not agree on relational aggressors, thus suggesting further importance of the social context. This study provides support for the use of alternative measures for classroom quality, such as the calculation of play units rather than the use of the ECERS-R, which did not predict
